Australia Day 2019
Australia Day 2019 was a picture perfect day. Temperature was high 20's, slight breeze, light fluffy clouds - just perfect.
For the sixth year in a row, I joined some of my CWA buddies and we set up in the old kitchen of Victoria's magnificent Government House. This is a day where we can support our patron, The Honourable Linda Dessau AC, meet the public and promote all the wonderful things about the CWA, see the joy on their faces as they have a famous scone with jam and cream, and best of all, learning from some of the older generations about some of the fabulous historical equipment in the kitchen.
The house was opened in 1876 and is a magnificent tribute to the people of Victoria, and shows the wealth of Melbourne during the gold rush. It trully is an honour to spend the day showing people equipment including the cast iron bain marie, the old stoves, preserving pots, gem scone trays, "copper" and mangle - both from when the room was used as a laundry.
I also get to spend time with my friends, serving customers fresh, wholesome food. Lots of people want recipes, advice on cooking and just the opportunity for a chat. There were a couple of people who told me that they love coming to visit us every year because we can be the only people they speak to all day. Social isolation is our Social Issues theme for 2019, and is something we all need to "take time for all things" from our busy schedules. I can honestly say, not talking to anyone all day is my worst nightmare.
Happy Australia Day everyone!
